About Us
Structural Integrity Engineering Pty Ltd (SIE) was founded in January 2000 by Peter de San Miguel and Doug Hawkes, two experienced structural engineers who had previously worked together at BHP Engineering. The formation of SIE came at a time of significant change in the Australian mining industry, including the sale of BHP Engineering to Hatch. Seeing an opportunity to create a specialist consultancy focused solely on structural engineering, Peter and Doug launched SIE from a modest room at the back of Peter’s house.
Their vision was clear from the outset: to deliver technical excellence, integrity, and trustworthy advice to clients in mining, ports, and heavy industry. These values remain the cornerstone of SIE’s operations today.

SIE was among the first in Australia to use the term “structural integrity” in its name, at a time when the concept was not widely recognised. Over the years, the term has become industry standard, but SIE continues to lead by example, offering deep expertise not only in structural design but also in welding, bolting, fabrication standards, non-destructive testing, and forensic inspections.
From its first project, SIE has grown into a respected consultancy with offices in Perth, Brisbane, and Newcastle, serving clients across Australia and internationally. The company is known for its high standards in structural analysis, design audits, incident recovery, and complex brownfield engineering solutions.
Doug Hawkes (Managing Director and Principal Structural Engineer) plays a pivotal role in shaping the industry, including serving as revision drafting leader and committee member for Standards Australia ME-043, responsible for the structural design standard AS 4324.1 His involvement in national standards and technical seminars has helped elevate the profession and guide best practices across Australia.
SIE is also at the forefront of inspection innovation, having integrated in-house drone services into regular operations. These capabilities allow SIE to perform high resolution structural inspections, and develop reality modelling with unprecedented detail and efficiency. These drone based workflows are transforming how inspections are conducted. SIE delivers data rich models that empower asset owners to make informed decisions faster.
